In BC and across Canada, it is illegal for an employer to deduct pay from your wages or tips to cover a customer leaving without paying (a "dine and dash"). Walk-offs are legally considered a normal cost of doing business and must be borne entirely by the employer

The Employment Standards Act of BC specifically prohibits this deduction, even if you previously agreed to it in writing.

File online: Use the BC Employment Standards Complaint Portal. It takes about 15 minutes. Time limits: You must file within 6 months of your last day of work if you leave the job, or within 1 year of the deduction if you still work there. The government will investigate your claim. If your employer is found guilty of making illegal deductions, the province will force them to pay you back with interest. The employer can also face mandatory government fines starting at $500for a first offense.
