英语阅读与写作擂台公开赛： Do you have guts?

  INSTRUCTIONS:

          Read the following paragraph and summarize the main idea by using no more than three sentences.

         Cigarette smoking has negative effects not only on the body of the person who smokes but also on the body of someone who regularly inhales second-hand smoke. Some of the most obvious effects are stroke, high blood pressure, sleep disorder, gum disease, heart failure, and lung cancer. Despite such appalling consequences, millions of people continue to smoke. It has been reported that smoking creates feelings of pleasure, reduces tension, and promotes good fellowship. On an abstract level, many smokers admit that smoking is a harmful habit. However, they are quick to set aside most, if not all, worries by noting that the number of cigarettes they smoke is well below the danger level, that they do not inhale the smoke, or that a cure for cancer will be found before they become ill with the disease. Realistically, smoking is a habit that is difficult to break because the nicotine found in tobacco goes into the blood and stimulates the brain to release dopamine, a substance that produces pleasant sensations for several minutes. As the nicotine level drops, the smoker feels anxious and craves another cigarette. Desptie the policies that now ban smoking in most public areas, the stress that people often experience at work and at home can drive them to smoke.
