我的功夫英语是如何炼成的:词汇的养鱼法

我们中国人学英语,时间加起来上十年,甚至十几年的不算少。但是我们老中的英语有个普遍的问题,就是我们的英语不好用,甚至学了也不会用。而某些其他外国人,比如印度人、菲律宾人,还有一些非洲人,好像刚学了两天就能用,这是怎么回事啊?

 

好问题!如何让我们的中国英语变得有用和能用呢?这其实就是一个我们中国都明白的死鱼和活鱼的问题。英语的单词就是鱼。鱼是死是活,关键是水。有水鱼就活,没水鱼就死。

 

这是什么意思啊?如果你没有看懂,我就再详细一点的解释一下,请你听一听,保证蛮有意思的。


我们中国人吃鱼都讲究新鲜。南方人更讲究,广东人则直接要“生猛”,就是鱼儿要是活蹦乱跳的。当然,新鲜的鱼也好,活蹦乱跳的鱼也好,就是比死鱼要好得多。


英语的单词也是这样。死记硬背的英语单词是死鱼,但是在阅读中连同故事的内容和语境一起获得的单词和词语,就是活鱼。养过鱼的人都知道,养观赏鱼,水缸越大,鱼越好养;做养鱼的生意,鱼塘越大,鱼长得越大越好。

 

 

我们每个学习英语的人,都有属于自己的核心英语词汇,这个词汇要变成活生生的、可以灵活运用的词汇,就必须们放到语境中去记忆,这个语境包括故事背景以及句型句式。有了这些语境,你的词汇就有了赖以生存的水,词汇就不会死掉了。


那么,具体的,我们怎么做呢?


我来加拿大之前,英语也是应试型为主,没有认真思考过如何让自己的词汇“活”起来的问题。到加拿大后,马上面临一个生存的问题,如何让自己英语的变得有用,一下子就迫在眉睫了。


我知道我不能从头学起,我要的是生存英语,所以我特别在意看广告,各种广告和招贴,比如银行的超市的餐馆的药店的车行的包括一些机构的,看见就拿,还把它们收集起来,认真的看,用心揣摩。广告和招贴,其实是最好的生活英语词汇的来源。这里没有过多的形容词汇,也绝对没有装逼的大词或者偏僻词汇,因为广告就是希望最多的人最容易的看懂嘛。

 

 

我有一段时间,还专门泡在,注意不是跑是泡,泡在COSTCO和REAL CANADAIN SUPRSTORE里阅读所有的商品标注。那可真是一个巨大的图书馆,我花了一个多星期才勉强看完,累得我头晕眼花像条狗。


但是,自从那以后,我记忆中的绝大多数日用品和服务类的英语词语就活起来了。


英语的阅读就是养鱼的水,我在前面的文章里讲了英语的精读,今天讲了这么多,最后落脚就在英语的泛读。英语泛读的“泛”,就是很多很多的养鱼的水。
