I must admit, although I am still not a big fan of my father--------we have our, say, Moments--------he did teach me something of extreme value, and that is the concept of EARNING.
This goes waaaaaaaay back to 初一. I was very much into <<大众软件>> back then, and of course, each issue of the magazine ran about $5.00 CNY. At 13 years old, I had no means of any income, and was forced to ask my father for money.
To which he responded: Ever wonder why you have your 2 hands?
He subsequently convinced his old coleagues at 南京图书馆 to take me in as a student temp. Legal or not, I was getting paid $40 CNY a week, cleaning up reading rooms and distributing magazines.
And that's how I landed many, many, many issues of <<大众软件>>. And then some.
Comes to think of that, that was my first job.
The point of that practice was not for the now laughable $40 CNY. The point, was to teach me about the idea of 幸福生活全靠劳动来创造.
Now I wonder how many kids these days still believe in this ancient philosophy.
