With the rapid development of transportation, China needed a new transit system to connect southern and northern regions. As a result, high-speed trains were introduced, and the world’s longest railway line was opened. Although high-speed rail brings convenience to people and stimulates economic growth in China, it also poses some hidden dangers.

The high-speed rail not only halves the time required to travel between cities but also contributes to an economic boom in southern China. My younger cousin studies at Northeastern University in Shenyang, while our hometown is in Fujian, a long distance across the country. Before the high-speed rail line was established, she had to spend about one and a half days on a regular train to get home. Now, with the high-speed rail, she can arrive in just 14 hours. Clearly, the long-distance rail line has made life easier. Additionally, since its opening, the Chinese government has used the rail network as a major tool for freight transportation. The rail line stops in major cities along the way, and its reduced travel time makes it more efficient for transporting goods. Many large companies and factories now use the rail for shipping products between the south and north, as it is more cost-effective than air freight and faster than traditional rail transport. Consequently, the high-speed rail has contributed significantly to China’s economic growth.

However, despite these benefits, the high-speed rail system still has many issues and hidden dangers. Firstly, many train operators are not yet fully familiar with the system, and some are even nervous about operating trains at such high speeds. Even though they are unlikely to drive at the maximum speed, they must be well-trained and confident in their abilities. This is crucial for passenger safety, and proper training is essential. In addition, in March, part of the rail line collapsed in central China after heavy rains, revealing concerns about the quality of the infrastructure. This incident raises doubts about the reliability of the rail line, and even those who have not yet traveled on it may feel anxious about their safety. Given that even a small problem with the rail line could result in disastrous consequences, China must invest more in ensuring the safety and quality of its rail infrastructure and trains.

While the high-speed rail system has undoubtedly brought great convenience to the people and boosted economic growth, without more attention to safety, it should not be expanded further until these concerns are addressed.
